The Importance Of Hydration: How To Increase Water Intake

The human body is interesting in that about 75% of it is made of water and we may start experiencing symptoms of severe dehydration after losing 10% of that water. Good hydration is important to cleanse our body, optimise our physical performance, ensure good muscle function, increase cognitive function, and promote cardiovascular health. When our bodies are well dehydrated, adequate blood volume can make sure that our heart works efficiently.

The Result Of Dehydration

When we exercise, just 2% of water loss can lead to mild dehydration, which can affect our brain function. Anxiety, mental fatigue, poor memory retention, headaches and irregular moods result from a lack of hydration as well. Your renal system depends on good hydration and your kidneys work each day to remove toxins and other excess substances through urine. By being well hydrated, our body temperature will remain at a safe level and we will produce enough sweat to regulate our body temperature, especially when it’s warm and humid or when we are exercising.

Fortunately, it’s extremely easy to stay hydrated:

Water - drinking water is always the best way to hydrate yourself. Put a big glass of water near you when working or watching TV. It’s not a matter of taste, but simply to make sure that your body remains healthy and well-functioning. During summer, a glass of cool water can make you feel really refreshed while helping your body stay hydrated.

Isotonic Sports Drinks - isotonic water is similar to your blood in mineral and carbohydrate concentration. Isotonic sports drinks contain sodium, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. If you are highly active and sweat a lot, isotonic drinks will hydrate you and restore the electrolyte level in your body. Avoid sports drinks that contain artificial flavouring, artificial sweetener, and food colouring.

Milk - milk is very nutritious and it is hydrating as well. Because milk contains fat, protein, and sugar lactose, it stays in your digestive system longer and hydrates your body longer.

Fruits- eating fruit is an enjoyable and nutritious way to increase water intake. Watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges, apricots, mangoes, and pineapple have high water content.

Coffee’s Diuretic Effect

If you are a regular coffee drinker, you should limit your intake. Coffee has a natural diuretic effect on your body. If you drink coffee regularly and you don’t drink enough water, dehydration could happen due to increased urination.
